Life in Forest Hill: a Distinguished District in the Heart of Midtown
Across our city, the name “Forest Hill” calls to mind picturesque landscapes and luxurious homes. That reputation is well deserved. Along with Rosedale and the Bridle Path, this Old Toronto neighbourhood is one of the most prestigious in the city. Its top-notch schools, ample green spaces, and charming local businesses also make it a wonderful place to raise a family!
If you’re thinking about making a move to Forest Hill, here’s what you should know…
Essentials
If ensuring that your kids get a top-notch education is a major priority, there’s no better place for your family than Forest Hill. Reputable public options include Forest Hill Junior and Senior School, Allenby Public School, North and West Preparatory Junior Public schools, and Forest Hill Collegiate Institute.
Those looking will find some of the most prestigious private schools in Canada. For boys, it doesn’t get better than Upper Canada College, which boasts a rich history, impressive academic performances, and 35 acres of beautiful outdoor space. If you have daughters, you’ll appreciate having Bishop Strachan School right in your own backyard. We’re talking about the oldest independent girls’ school in the country!
Looking for the perfect place to worship? Beth Tzedec and Holy Blossom come to mind right off the bat. The Forest Hill Jewish Centre is home to a gorgeous synagogue, while Congregation Beth Haminyan and Beth Lida offer more intimate spaces. Forest Hill United Church and Our Lady of Assumption Parish (Catholic) also serve the area.
Out & About
Forest Hill Village is the district to visit when you want to grab a bite, savour a coffee, or take care of some day-to-day business. Here you’ll find a selection of cafes and takeout options, along with specialty food markets like the Kitchen Table. Local essential services include everything from dry cleaners to opticians to major bank branches.
Of course, this quaint retail district is about culture as well as convenience. The very cozy TYPE Books has an incredible selection of local and international literature, while Art Interiors, Izzy Gallery, and Lonsdale Gallery are ideal places to admire creative works.
For great eats, head over to Eglinton West Village. Restaurants along this nearby strip run the gamut, from Vietnamese to bistro fare. Local favourites include the Great Maratha (for divine curries and tikka masala) and Aish Tanoor (which serves up some of the city’s best shwarma). You’ll also find a collection of posh boutiques in the area, including Revival Couture for high-end vintage and Mark Lash for elegantly-crafted jewellery.
Getting Around
While there’s little reason to leave Forest Hill, getting in and out of the area couldn’t be easier. Local bus routes serve the neighourhood well, while nearby St. Clair West and Eglinton West subway stations connect it to the rest of the city.
A new light rail hub known as Forest Hill Station is also under construction, and it’s going to provide convenient commutes for even more local residents. Lastly, if you have a vehicle, the nearby Allen Expressway will take you wherever you need to go!
Homes
Looking for a fantastic selection of high-end homes? You’ve come to the right place. In Lower Forest Hill, you’ll find no shortage of stately stone and brick mansions. Many of these structures were built during the pre-war period, and continue to stand the test of time. The houses in Upper Forest Hill tend to be smaller by comparison, but they’re still very attractive and well-tended.
Single-family homes in Forest Hill can come with some pretty steep price tags. If you’re seeking more affordable options in the area, check out some of the luxurious local condo buildings.
